Hoops: Independence boys open with win; Page splits on the road

The Independence High School boys’ basketball team opened the new season with a victory as the Eagles raced past LaVergne 74-57 on Thursday in Thompson’s Station.

Jett Montgomery scored 21 points and Brayden Buck drilled five 3-pointers for 15 more to lead Indy.

After leading 15-12 through the first quarter, the Eagles extended their lead to 10 points by halftime and exploded for 21 points in the third quarter for a 55-37 advantage heading into the final frame.

Houston Hicks added 10 points in the win.

Brennon Hagewood netted 20 points to lead LaVergne. He went 10-for-13 at the foul line.

The Independence girls posted a 46-40 win in the early contest Thursday. Statistics weren't provided. 

Page girls 70, Mt. Juliet 34

Braley Bushman kicked off her senior season with a 27-point outing as the Page girls claimed a road win at Mt. Juliet Thursday.

Bushman hit for 21 points in the first half as the Patriots built a 37-17 lead. Sadie Porter added 16 points, knocking down four triples, and Brooklyn Burrow tallied 10.

Jakoria Woods scored 11 to lead Mt. Juliet.
